The Myth of the Objective Eye: If Every Mind Has a Map, Who Sees the Territory?

We are rather fond of the word objective. It sounds respectable. Put “objective” before an observation and suddenly it acquires a tie, a briefcase, and permission to enter the boardroom. Call something “subjective,” and it is quietly escorted towards the door marked Personal Opinion. Yet there is a small problem that we rarely stop to examine: who exactly is doing the observing? A human being. And therein lies the mischief.

Every human being encounters the world through a unique neurological, psychological, linguistic, cultural and experiential architecture. We see, hear, remember, delete, distort, generalise, associate, interpret and eventually assign meaning. In Neuro-Linguistic Programming, we might describe what emerges from this process as an Internal Representation (IR). The external world may provide an event or stimulus, but meaning does not necessarily arrive gift-wrapped with it. Much of that meaning is constructed by the person experiencing it.

Consider something ridiculously ordinary. Someone does not respond to a message. That is the observable event. One person thinks, “She is ignoring me.” Another thinks, “She must be busy.” A third wonders, “I hope everything is all right.” A fourth has already forgotten that a message was sent. One event has generated four Internal Representations, four meanings and potentially four completely different emotional states. The unanswered message itself contains none of these meanings. There is no microscopic packet of rejection hiding between the blue ticks. Something happened outside; something quite different happened within the observer.

If this is true of something as mundane as an unanswered message, the problem becomes considerably more interesting when we begin talking about happiness, sorrow, success, freedom, justice, love or fulfilment. We routinely use these words as though they point towards universally shared experiences. Yet the word may be common while the Internal Representation attached to it is radically different. For one person happiness may mean celebration and excitement; for another it may mean silence. For one it may be achievement; for another, freedom from the compulsion to achieve. One person’s exhilarating uncertainty may be another person’s intolerable anxiety. We share vocabulary far more easily than we share experience.

This is what makes Yuval Noah Harari’s question in Sapiens so fascinating. After centuries of scientific, economic and technological progress, are human beings actually happier? It is an important question, but it is also an epistemologically troublesome one. Who exactly is this entity called “humanity” whose happiness we are attempting to evaluate? Humanity does not wake up on Monday morning. Humanity does not fall in love, sit beside a hospital bed, grieve a loss, laugh uncontrollably or experience the quiet contentment of an ordinary afternoon. Individuals do.

Of course, we can measure reported life satisfaction across populations. We can examine income, health, longevity, social relationships, security, autonomy and hundreds of other variables associated with wellbeing. Such research is immensely useful. The problem arises when we move, almost imperceptibly, from measuring conditions associated with happiness to making statements about happiness itself. Somewhere along the way, aggregated subjective reports begin masquerading as an objective human experience. Perhaps we do not objectively measure happiness at all. Perhaps what we measure are observable, physiological or self-reported correlates of experiences that individuals have learned to call happiness. It is a less impressive sentence, admittedly, but possibly a more accurate one.

Freedom creates an even more interesting complication. We can document whether people possess freedom of expression, movement, association or political participation. These are observable and enormously important conditions. Yet possessing external freedom and experiencing oneself as free are not necessarily the same thing. A person may possess considerable external liberty while remaining psychologically imprisoned by fear, shame, expectation or an exhausting dependence upon approval. Another may live under significant external constraints while preserving an extraordinary degree of inner autonomy. This does not mean oppression can simply be reframed away; that would be both intellectually careless and ethically dangerous. It simply means that external condition and internal experience belong to different levels of description. Confusing them impoverishes our understanding of both.

And this brings us to Alfred Korzybski’s deceptively simple proposition: The map is not the territory.” The idea became particularly influential within Neuro-Linguistic Programming. My representation of reality is not reality itself. Simple enough. But there is a more uncomfortable question hidden inside that proposition: How exactly do I access the territory without a map?

I cannot remove my nervous system before perceiving something. I cannot temporarily suspend memory, language, culture, beliefs, previous experiences, expectations and sensory filters and then inspect reality in some pristine, unmediated condition. The moment the external world enters human awareness, it has encountered an observer. The deeper epistemological problem, therefore, may not simply be that we sometimes confuse our maps with the territory. It is that we are map-making creatures attempting to understand a territory to which we have no completely map-free access.

Does that mean objectivity does not exist? It is tempting at this point to declare that everything is subjective, but that creates its own delightful philosophical trap. If everything is subjective, then presumably the statement “everything is subjective” must also be subjective. More importantly, reality appears capable of imposing rather firm constraints upon our interpretations. I may construct an elaborate Internal Representation in which gravity does not apply to me, but gravity is unlikely to attend my reframing workshop. Reality has an inconvenient habit of pushing back.

Perhaps, therefore, we do not need to abandon objectivity. We need to reconsider what we mean by it. Objectivity may not mean perceiving reality without an observer. It may instead mean developing methods that minimise the influence of any single observer. Imagine several people entering a room. One calls it peaceful, another depressing and a third claustrophobic. These are subjective interpretations. Ask them to measure the dimensions of the room using the same system, however, and their measurements should be approximately consistent. We call the result objective. Yet even this objectivity depends upon collectively agreed units, instruments, definitions and procedures. A metre is not growing naturally on a tree somewhere waiting to be discovered. Human beings constructed a system and agreed to use it.

What gives such measurement its power is not that humanity has somehow escaped subjectivity. It is that multiple observers following agreed procedures can obtain sufficiently consistent results. What we commonly call objectivity might therefore be understood more cautiously as a form of disciplined intersubjectivity. Science does not become weaker because scientists are human observers. Its strength lies precisely in the mechanisms it has developed to compensate for human limitations: replication, measurement, controls, falsifiability, transparent methodology and critical scrutiny. Objectivity, in this sense, is not a magical view from nowhere. It is a disciplined attempt to prevent one person’s map from quietly declaring itself the territory.

This distinction matters far beyond laboratories and philosophical discussions. Consider how frequently we make statements such as, “He is unmotivated,” “She is difficult,” “They are resistant to change,” “This student lacks ability,” or “That employee has an attitude problem.” Notice the subtle transformation that has occurred. An interpretation has dressed itself as an observation. “He submitted the assignment three days late” describes an observable behaviour; “He is irresponsible” is a map. “She disagreed with three proposals during the meeting” describes something that happened; “She is negative” is an interpretation. We perform these transformations so effortlessly that we often cease to notice them. Once the map becomes invisible, we begin calling it reality.

Perhaps this is also why communication between human beings is far more complicated than the transmission of words. We may agree upon the word success while carrying completely different representations of it. We may speak passionately about freedom while imagining different worlds. We may tell someone, “I understand exactly what you mean,” when what has actually happened is considerably more modest: I have translated what you said into something available within my own map. That acknowledgement does not weaken communication. It may make genuine communication possible, because understanding another person does not require possessing an identical map. It requires remembering that ours is not theirs.

Human societies, of course, could not function without shared meanings. Money, laws, institutions, education, organisations and language itself depend upon enormous networks of intersubjective agreement. But shared meaning should not be confused with identical meaning. Collective agreement allows us to coordinate our behaviour; it does not guarantee identical subjective experience. The moment we forget that distinction, consensus begins masquerading as truth and statistical averages begin masquerading as individual realities.

So who finally sees the territory? Perhaps nobody does—at least not completely. Each of us encounters something of it through perception, biology, language, memory and experience. We construct maps, compare them, defend them, revise them and occasionally discover that reality has drawn a mountain exactly where our map confidently showed an empty field. Sometimes another person’s map reveals something ours had deleted entirely. And occasionally, through evidence, dialogue and genuine curiosity, we discover that the landscape is considerably larger than the little patch we had labelled Reality.

Objectivity, then, may not be the opposite of subjectivity. Perhaps it is what happens when subjectivity becomes sufficiently self-aware to question its own certainty. The truly objective person may not be the one who declares, “I see things as they are,” but the one capable of asking, This is how I see them. What might my map be leaving out?”

The map is not the territory. But perhaps wisdom begins when the map finally knows that it is a map.
