Astrology and Pseudoscience: A Serious and Balanced Perspective

In Indian cultural philosophy, the Vedas are the base sources of knowledge, dharma, and the philosophy of life, and astrology is called the eye of the Vedas. “Jyotish” means “light.”
It is also considered a science with a long tradition in India, where it has been associated with time knowledge, the making of almanacs (panchang), deciding auspicious moments (muhurat), and sometimes the study of celestial bodies.
“Yat Pinde Tat Brahmande” means: “As is the microcosm, so is the macrocosm.”
The energies, consciousness, and laws that govern the universe are also present within us. That is why astrology is not only about predicting an individual’s future, but is also believed to apply to the entire creation. For example, it is linked to events such as droughts, weather, and conditions across different regions of the world. Time is extremely important, and in fact the most essential factor for anything to manifest; the whole game is about time and space.
Astrology itself is such a vast and complex field that even a small mistake can make the prediction wrong. It also includes different methods of interpretation, such as KP astrology, Nadi astrology, and Lal Kitab.
Over time, astrology became more of a business than a source of knowledge. When someone takes advantage of a person’s helplessness and fear to extract money, or when every problem is presented as a “planetary defect ,” astrology loses its dignity and turns into superstition. For example, there are 12 types of Kaal Sarp Dosh, but they are not all negative; depending on planetary positions and their significations in the birth chart, the same Kaal Sarp can become a “yog” rather than a Dosha.
If astrology is adopted as a cultural tradition, it can play a supportive social role. But when the same astrology becomes the basis of every life decision, the problem begins. Even today, people check muhurat before starting work, marriage, mundan, and similar ceremonies.
A wise person is one who respects tradition, but does not abandon reason. Before accepting any prediction blindly, it is necessary to see whether its basis is clear, whether the person is honest, and whether the claim can be verified in any way.
Ultimately, it can be said that astrology is a subject worthy of discussion in itself, but its misuse becomes superstition. We should understand tradition as something living, not rigid; and faith should be alert, not blind. When a person walks with knowledge, experience, and discernment, they are neither deceived nor trapped in illusion. This balanced perspective is the greatest need of our time.
We are black or white, rich or poor, in sorrow or in joy — whatever we are, we are so because of our own karma.
According to Sanatan Hindu philosophy and scriptures, karma is mainly of three types. Many scholars also divide it into four categories for better understanding.
These karmas can be easily understood through the example of a gun and a bullet:
Sanchita Karma
Meaning: The total collection of all good and bad deeds of the soul from past lives, like a bank account.
Gun example: This is like all the bullets stored in the magazine that have not yet been fired.
Prarabdha Karma
Meaning: The portion of accumulated karma that is ready to bear fruit in this present life. This is what we commonly call fate or destiny. The sukh and dukh we experience in life depend on this.
Gun example: This is like a bullet that has already been fired from the gun, which cannot be brought back and must now be endured.
Kriyamana Karma
Meaning: The karma we are performing right now in the present. Its results may come immediately, or it may get added to our accumulated karma.
Gun example: This is like the bullet we are now loading into the gun and preparing to fire. In other words, this is under our full control.
Agami Karma
Meaning: The possible future karmas created by our present actions and decisions. Sometimes this is considered a part of kriyamana karma.
That is why discussion on astrology is never only a debate between belief and disbelief; it also becomes a question of tradition, science, social psychology, and ethics.
And this balanced perspective is very useful for today’s time.
